Track four on Little Hug (April 2021). The title is spelled Premadonna on the EP; the lyrics say prima donna. Luke solo. Class satire on the small recovery record, before Big Hug’s crypto/MLM stack but running the same American math: parents, paychecks, bodies, debt.
The premise is a refusal mistaken for vanity: calling me a prima donna / just because I never wanna beg for a dollar. The alternatives are escape fantasies (sauna, Tijuana, that’s what a free man do), the same kick it energy as later Kick It in Nirvana, here broke and bitter. The confusion is inherited honestly: a kid who never understood why his parents went grim over brightly colored envelops, or why his father was miserable when ticker tape was drowning in the red.
The chorus is where it turns sharp. Debt collection becomes state violence (they’ll send their dogs and drag your ass on down), and healthcare becomes mutual extraction: the doctor picked our pocket / got his student loan to pay. Patient and physician trapped in the same machine, an idea I Love Money would pick up a year later. There’s no bridge out; we all got bills to pay just stacks until it ends. The money track before Big Hug turned capitalism into a party hook.
Written, performed, and mixed by Luke Francis Walton. Mastered by Riley Knapp.
Lyrics
Never thought I needed a lot But Shit keeps piling up Never understood why my parents Seemed so unhappy when They got brightly colored envelops Calling me a prima donna Just because I never wanna Beg for a dollar Oo Rather kick it in a sauna Rather move to Tijuana That's what a free man do Never thought I needed a lot but We all got bills to pay No room to negotiate No hope to run away They'll send their dogs And drag your ass on down We all are terrified Get sick and realize The doctor picked our pocket Got his student loan to pay Ay We all got bills to pay Yeah We all got bills to pay Yeah Never thought I'd enter the lotto Hope is all that I got Never understood why my father Was so unhappy when ticker tape Was drowning in the red Calling me a prima donna Just because I never wanna Beg for a dollar Oo Rather kick it in a sauna Rather move to Tijuana That's what a free man do Never thought I needed a lot but We all got bills to pay No room to negotiate No hope to run away They'll send their dogs And drag your ass on down We all are terrified Get sick and realize The doctor picked our pocket Got his student loan to pay Ay We all got bills to pay Yeah We all got bills to pay Yeah
