The crickets were real. Our place in North Park, San Diego had gaps under the screen and no AC, so when it got hot, you left the door open. They found their way in. The worst wasn’t the crickets though: an alligator lizard got in too, and the only thing on hand to chase it out was a tambourine.
It worked.
The Bandcamp notes say the crickets on the EP were not added in post. They weren’t. They were everywhere in the house.
There’s something in this that connects to every person who ever lived somewhere warm and porous. Someone in ancient Egypt probably lit a lamp, swatted something off a reed, and went back to work. Modernity is thinner than we think.
