FEiN · Little Homes · 2016 · with Brandon Michael Woodward · From Little Homes

FEiN Little Homes: we're all happy lying to ourselves frolicking through hell: welcome to your new family, bride pulled up by hair and teeth; love me with your wallet, lonely people will pay, laugh at it all.

Track twelve on Little Homes (May 31, 2016), after Roadtrip. Walton/Woodward co-write. A fingerpicked satire on loneliness as a thing to be sold back to you, tied to BMI’s homelessness thread.

The refrain is the album’s bleakest comfort: we’re all just happy lying to ourselves, but at least we’re not alone / we’re all just happy frolicking through hell, but at least we’re not some sad sad sucker there alone. Hell is bearable as a group activity, and the loneliness gets exported onto whichever sucker is left outside. Brandon’s verse plays the salesman, welcome to your new family, I will show you to your room, buy you all your wildest dreams, the little home as showroom. Luke’s bride verse turns rescue into extraction, pulled her up from poverty by her hair and teeth, and the duo finally states the terms outright: love me with your wallet baby, love me with your checkbook, nothing is wrong. The hook names the business model, lonely people staying lonely, lonely people will pay, and the song fractures into four bare repetitions of Alone, the sucker revealed at last as the listener.

Where Don’t You reached toward another person, this one monetizes the reaching. Same satirical line as American Man and #Grownupz. Leads into Pretty Things.

Written by Luke Francis Walton and Brandon Michael Woodward (FEiN). Produced and recorded by FEiN at Tiny Giant; engineered at LMU; mixed and mastered by Frank Rosato at Woodcliff (Discogs). Brian Robert Jones, bass (album).

Lyrics
(Fingerpicked, Luke Singing:)
We
're all
just happy lying to ourselves,
But at least we're not alone.
Yeah we're all just happy frolicking through hell,
But at least we're not some sad sad sucker there alone.

(Fingerpicked, Brandon Singing:)
Welcome to your new family,
I will show you to your room.
You'll know it well,
I am here to help.
Buy you all your wildest dreams.

(Finger Strummed, Luke Singing:)
We
're all
just happy lying to ourselves,
But at least we're not alone.
Yeah
we're all just happy frolicking through hell,
But at least we're not some sad sad sucker there alone.

(Fingerpicked, Luke Singing:)
There she is my lovely bride to be,
Pulled her up from poverty,
By her hair and teeth.
If that isn't love
Then love's a
thing that I don't need.

(Finger Strummed, Luke Singing:)
We
're all
just happy lying to ourselves,
But at least we're not alone.
Yeah we're all just happy frolicking through hell,
But at least we're not some sad sad sucker there alone.

(Pick enters, quarter note pulse, Both Sing:)
Love me with
your wallet baby,
Love me with
your checkbook,
Nothing is wrong,
Nothing is wrong.
Oh.

Lonely people staying lonely,
Lonely people will pay.
